An interview with young photographer Kevin Brown
The young photographer that took a new direction in the presentation of his works. Brown believes in minimalism, creative thoughts, and spontaneity.
_ How did you get into photography?
_ Well, it started when I was much younger. My mom bought me one of those Polaroid cameras when I was about the age of 8 years old. I would take pictures of anything. People, trees, even the sand if it looked interesting. By the time I was 14, I picked up a book at the library during summer vacation. I think it was by Ansel Adams. Of course it would have to be. He was my teacher. His books were so intriguing. So detailed that it made photography an art for me. He talked about photography on so many different levels. Optics, science, mechanics, it’s all there. So I took a part time job at the local pharmacy, you know running errands and things of that nature. I had to save up for a “real” camera. I had to take the pictures that he was talking about in those books. It meant patience first and foremost. Because I didn’t have all the fancy lighting equipment, I had to wait for the light. Photography isn’t something that just happens, it’s created.
_ Printing your photos on canvas allows you to display them in a gallery and enjoy new visibility and feedback. How did you come up with the idea to display your artworks in this way?
_ I was at the museum actually. Looking at all of the artwork and how rich the detail was, I was very impressed. It made the art look “livable”, you know as if you could live in the picture. I thought this will be a fantastic way to make my photos larger. Of course this meant that I had to use wider angle lenses, but I had to to make them catch the eye. Also there is less fading over time, and what better way to get your pictures onto someone’s walls. It increases the value of their decor to have photos on canvases. You can even frame them if you like.
_ Your canvas prints have really bright colors and recall minimalistic paintings. Who/what were your inspiration sources?
_ Today I really enjoy looking at Man Ray’s photographs, but also works by the japanese artist Ei-Q. I for example. I am inspired at how any artist can take something so simple and turn it into something grand. For instance you take a woman who is just standing and you position the lighting so that her shadow is elongated 25 to 30 feet. That makes the picture, it gives it dimension. I have seen several screen-printings and photos on canvas tranfers .
_ How do you feel about digital manipulation and to what extent do you use it?
_ That in itself is a different form of art to me. I do use it only very scarcely. When you want to enhance your photo on canvas prints, it is a great way to add in extra shadows, or lighting. You have to know what you are doing with digital photo on canvas because if you use to much effects, you will loose precision and picture definition. It also looses spontaneity. Working with photos on canvas also means that the mistake you make digitaly will forever live in your artwork.
Thanks a lot for this interview.

Practically everyone has a cell phone and every cell phone sold today also has a digital camera embedded in it. Transfering tiny digital photos to XXL canvas prints may sound like a strange plan, but here at photo-on-canvas.co.uk, it is a frequent request. In this post we will try to provide a few tips to optimise your cell phone photos for digital canvas printing or simply be creative in manipulating them.
Cell phones photos and spontaneity.
You certainly recall those times where you see something that you want to take a picture of and you don’t have a camera on you. The easiest solution then is to pick up your phone and catch the moment instantly. These shots often appears blured, to high constrasted, or even striked with virtual light beams. Instead of blaming cell phones for their bad quality, you may be the kind of person who appreciate the value of more experimental/accidental photo effects.

Digital photo enlargement for best results in canvas printing
Digital photo resizing
Camera phones and images from the web are generally too small to make good canvas enlargements. For those who are new to digital image manipulation it is possible to get a higher photo resolution for your cell phone shots. First, transfer your photo files to your computer. Then open the photo file you want to print on canvas with a programm like GIMP for example. You can modifie image or canvas size: for printing on canvas 300 pixels for every inch is preferred. Don’t forget to verifiy the actual size (in inches, mm. or cm.) of your photo. You may have the proper resolution (300 dpi) but only a 3×4cm picture, wich is to small for canvas printing.
Changing size & resolution will NOT affect the picture’s quality! It will only make it “bigger”and more compatible when you upload it online.
Since you digitally manipulating your photo file, take a few more minutes to adjust luminosity & contrast, or even add a transparent color layer or graduated shading.
Good Luck and have fun preparing your cell phone photos for digital canvas prints!

Let’s face it. You have a lot of options when getting prints, from big box discount stores to self-printing.
I recently discover this nice entry at Artistportfolio.net: a guide to printing. It gives you precious advices on those three “core processes” in artwork reproduction: Digital offset, offset lithography and giclee print. Reproducing your original artworks or photos as a limited edition increase the possibility to share them with a larger group of people.
Experimenting with several printing techniques will increase your creativity, and if your into selling your art, it may increase you pool of potential customers. “Limited editions prints” and “artwork reproduction” are two notions the author is discussing at the very end of the guide. Can digital prints be considered as “original” or not, and if yes, under which criterion?

An old photograph of one of your relatives kept in an old album or loose in a drawer can fade or rip leaving you bereft of what could possibly be your last visual reminder of them. A digital canvas print made from that photograph using digital photo canvas technology can preserve that photograph as if it had been done in oils on fine artist canvas.
The cost of preserving your family’s photographs as digital canvas prints is considerably less than if you had a traditional photographer making copies of those photographs, and with a digital photo on canvas the photographs will be preserved longer and have the look of fine art rather than a regular photograph. Your families digital canvas prints can be framed to look like oil paintings of your relatives.
These digital photo on canvas prints make excellent gifts for all members of your family and friends. Too often our old family photographs are lost because they were kept in albums or loosely in drawers. Making a family tree that requires these old photographs becomes realistically impossible if the old photographs are not preserved. There is no finer way of encouraging interest in your family’s ancestors then with digital canvas prints made and given to all family members to help them to remember old and, perhaps, deceased family members. If you would rather not give large digital photo prints as gifts but were thinking of an album of digital canvas print, online digital canvas printing services make it an easy and quick way of completing your project.
Family albums preserved in digital canvas print photo albums would make a gift that would be treasured and proudly kept by all family members.
Preserving old photographs of family is easy and thoughtful by utilizing the digital canvas printing services that are available online. Your photographs can be safely uploaded by using your own scanner and computer and they would not have to leave your home or be mailed for copying services. You can pick and choose the size and the amount of money you want to spend on your gifts or a personal gift for yourself of digital canvas prints.
